I started keeping track of my average daily food cost for my raw diet. Here is a quick sample. This is based on a 3000 calorie diet.
10 organic Valencia oranges
- $4.99 ($4.49/10 for case) Whole Foods
3-4lbs bananas
- $0.79/lb ($0.71/lb for case) Whole Foods
1lb organic mixed greens
- $4.99 Costco
2-4 organic tomatoes
- $2.00 Whole Foods
Small handful of sunflower seeds, nuts, or some high fat raw food.
Various other fruits and veggies (carrots, grapes, etc....); not more than $5.00/day.
My food costs, on a daily basis, will vary from about $8.00 - $25.00 depending on what I eat, and how much money I had to spend while shopping earlier in the week. This is comparative to the cost of a day on the SAD (Standard American Diet).
There are many things to help with the cost of food as well. For example, you can grow some of your own in a garden, or plant various fruit bearing treas. You could also forage, as many raw vegans are known to do. Our ancestors have survived on foraging for centuries.
Keep in mind, many wild foraged plants are much more nutritious than produce purchased in the store, or picked out of a garden.
